  • On The Road -- I'm not retired yet, but plan to take an early retirement at 55 in 3 1/2 years. At age 51, I notice some changes, and am not crazy about any of them:
    • I like my routines, and don't even get excited about short 3-day business trips to distant and even interesting cities. I'm OK once I'm there, but I resent the disruption. This is a fairly new reaction.
    • I also sense the same resentment when out-of-town guests (relatives come and stay with us, even for just a couple days)
    • I have cut way down on spicy foods, once a great love.
    • I feel somewhat anxious or fearful of the unknown much more often than I ever did in the past.
    • With all the daily medication I take, my interest in having sex has decreased. Some of the meds have that effect.
    • I can't remember how many years it has been since I had a decent night's sleep. I'm up every 2-3.5 hours.
There is a dignitiy and a specialness about getting older, having that valuable life experience under your belt (and I DO mean UNDER your belt), and having memories of life in years prior to the births of many of your acquaintenances. I can't stop the aging process, so I try to make the best of it. Regular exercise, eating right, pacing myself, getting the proper rest, and making choices to be generous with myself now, rather than when I cannot physically enjoy things, help keep me broad and positive in my outlook. But experiencing the effects of aging (bushier eyebrows and the above) are not all fun. -- L.H>

  • Volunteer Advocacy Group -- The Primelife Advisory Network (PLAN) is a volunteer advocacy group that works to affect positive change on the image of mature adults in the media, advertising, and the entertainment industry.

PLAN currently has approximately 1,200 members in 31 states, and it's growing! It's free to join, and participation ranges from local chapter meetings to phone and mail surveys. Recently PLAN conducted a survey, in which 320 members participated, which focused on today's television programming. The results make a powerful statement, and they soon will be released to the general media and television trade media across the country. The ultimate result is television executives hearing what PLAN, and the mature audience, in general has to say, and beginning to realized more mature-oriented programming must be produced to satisfy the fastest growing age segment in the country!

Mature adults interested in improving the image of "seniors" in this country, can call PLAN at 800-284-3140 or e-mail Frank Conaway -- primelif@ix.netcom.com.
