Senior Summer School

2 May 1996 -- Something wonderful is happening on university campuses in the U.S. and Canada. Every summer there's a growing number of senior citizens who are going back to school thanks to a unique program called Senior Summer School.

The program was created to fill a void in the lives of many retirees who may have not been able to attend college as young adults, or if they did, their curriculums did not allow them to take art, music, ethnic or cultural studies classes that are now offered.

To meet the needs of today's active and inquisitive seniors, our programs are continuously changing and evolving. Therefore, in l996, Senior Summer School goes international and is proud to announce the addition of three new universities -- in Canada, Maine and Los Angeles, as well as continue to offer programs in Wisconsin, Santa Barbara and San Diego. Programs range in length from two to ten weeks and registration for summer 1996 runs through the late spring.

As prices in today's economy are constantly on the rise, it becomes increasingly more difficult for senior citizens to spend money on pleasurable activities. However, one of our programs offer seniors the opportunity to travel, lodge, eat and take courses for three weeks under $800. They can also experience various college campus lifestyles during one summer by participating in a number of two-week programs at various universities at a very modest price.

Senior citizens can continue to expand their minds as Senior Summer School offers three new locations for them to attend college during the summer months.

  1. Mt. Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada;
  2. The University of Maine in Bangor;
  3. and the University of Judaism in Los Angeles have been added to the list of available sites.
Programs will continue to be offered at:
  • The University of Wisconsin, Madison;
  • the University of California, Santa Barbara;
  • and San Diego State University.

Mt. Allison University renowned as the "number one undergraduate university in Canada", offers an exciting array of college courses as well as scenic territories to explore. This two-or-four-week program, in the quaint maritime city of Sackville, allows seniors to learn about the marshland and waterfowl habitats, shipbuilding, in addition to venturing out to artistic Peggy's Cove, and the Bay of Fundy to experience the world's highest tides. Additional trips are offered to the capital cities of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The University of Maine is nestled amid mountains, lakes and the seashore, yet it is not remote. The university is home to the Raymond H. Folger Library, the largest library in the state; the Museum of Art which houses the works of many masters, as well as a planetarium. In addition, one can sign up to play chess with a robot at the Robotics Lab. Participants will learn about the colorful local history in this "lumber capital", as they view the quaint victorian and colonial architecture of the town. Some field trips include Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park, sightseeing affluent Bar Harbor, and experiencing the workings of a hydroelectric dam at Spencer Falls.

The University of Judaism in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles is dedicated to the study and advancement of Jewish life and is at the forefront of American Jewish education. Educational programs will concentrate on Jewish study, cultural enrichment and personal renewal and include the Jewish contribution to literature, philosophy, history, contemporary life, art, music and the motion picture industry. Tours will be conducted of Jewish neighborhoods and synagogues, the Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance, the new Skirball Museum and Cultural Center, and the general attractions of Los Angeles.

At all six universities, participants have the opportunity to take part in college-level courses, taught by highly qualified instructors. A few of the courses offered in the past are comparative religion, Russian history, music appreciation and voices of women -- there is something to stimulate everyone. Of the many participants, there are those who never finished high school, as well as those with college and doctorate degrees. As anyone can see, seniors have the opportunity to meet new people of all ages and backgrounds during their stay, lasting anywhere from two to ten weeks.

In 1995, more than l400 seniors enrolled, some of whom have been in the program for nine years. The Senior Summer School program prides itself on a mix of couples and singles, so all feel welcome. The seniors take part in many on-premise social activities, such as casino night, bingo, bridge tournaments and ballroom dancing, as well as have access to a fitness center, swimming pool, tennis and golf. Seniors will constantly be on the go from sunrise to sunset, as day and weekend trips are also provided.

Participants live in private and university residents halls which include two bedroom suites with private baths, private rooms with a community bathroom and fully furnished apartments. Seniors can forget about cooking and cleaning for the summer, as high quality meals are provided with unlimited servings that are sensitive to the needs of senior diets. And, weekly housekeeping is provided including laundering of linens and towels and room cleaning.

Located in Broward County, Florida, Senior Summer School was created to offer active seniors a challenging and satisfying way to avoid the summer heat, while expanding their minds and exploring other areas of the U.S. and Canada. Senior Summer School fills a very real need and an often deeply felt gap in the lives of many retirees. Many seniors may have missed the opportunity to attend college as young adults, or if they did go to college, their curriculum didn't allow them to indulge in the art, music, ethnic or cultural studies or classes that are now offered. As anyone can see, Senior Summer School also provides seniors a chance to continue wonderful years of growing and learning!
