Laws & Legislative Important to Senior Citizens

This page is intended to identify laws, bills, hearings, or judicial decisions that could affect senior citizens. We will also list web sites of interest of this nature.

  • Bulletins -- notes and bulletins of legal actions affecting seniors or caregivers

  • Kennedy/Kassebaum Bill -- limits "spending down" of assets to qualify for Medicaid.

  • A New Federal Law Prohibits States from Taxing Non-resident retirees. -- Good News for Senior Citizens who have moved to a state that has no or lower state income taxes.

  • Get the latest schedule for C-Span 1 & C-Span 2.

  • Senior Citizens' Equity Act -- increases the amount Social Security recipients, 65 to 69 years of age, can earn before loss of some benefits. Increases from the present $11,160 (95') to $15,000 (96') and each year thereafter till $30,000 in the year 2000. The bill also provides tax incentives to encourage the purchase of long-term care insurance and makes it easier for seniors to reserve retirement communities for adults only without facing lawsuits.
