Writing poetry or imaginative prose is very creative and stimulating -- besides being fun. Sharing a poem with others adds to the joy of this creative process. "Consider writer, novelist and poet, May Sarton who kept a journal of her 80th year in which she wrote of her own old age, 'By far more reason for happiness even than these,' referring to the love of friends and family, `the sovereign reason is that I am writing a poem almost everyday." -- from article Age Should Be Embraced, Not Feared by Jim Hursey.

PLEASE NOTE We at Seniors-Site do not feel entitled to make judgements about creative work. However, in order to establish some order in our web pages we will place them in certain pages as we best can determine are appropriate. We do not wish to offend anyone. Works with erotic content or inappropriate words will not be posted. For information regarding, definitions we use, and copyright information see below.

DEFINITIONS

  • poem -- a composition designed to convey a vivid an imaginative sense of experience, characterized by the use of condensed language chosen for its meaning, and by use of such literary techniques as structured meter, natural cadences, rhyme, or metaphore. An arrangement of words in verse; especially, a rhythmical compostion, sometimes rhymed, expressing facts, ideas, or emotions in a style more concentrated, imaginative, and powerful than that of ordinary speech; some poems are in meter, some in free verse.

  • prose -- the ordinary form of written, or spoken language, without rhyme or meter: opposed to verse, poetry.

  • limerick -- a light humorous or nonsensical verse of five anapestic lines usually with the rhyme scheme aabba.

  • haiku -- an unrhymed Japanese lyric poem having a fixed three-line form consisting of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively.
COPYRIGHT
When anyone writes a poem, or any other written work, if the person places on the paper these words "Copyright 19xx by your name" the work is automatically copyrighted. When a poem is posted on this website, a copyright notice and date is posted with it to identify that the poem is the author's property. This is to protect the author's rights as the author owns the creative work and can do with it what they wish.

A more formal (well documented and witnessed) copyright may be desired by some individuals. A more formal copyright is more valuable only in case of a challenge to the work ending in courts. One method of accomplishing this is to have the page(s) notarized. Another method is to apply to the Library of Congress for a copyright. The form you fill out is simple and you send it in along with $20 and in a short time you will be provided a copyright number.

At seniors-site, when you send us your poem, we assume that it is your work and normally post that it is copyrighted by you. This protects you, however, if it is someone else's work we are not responsible for copyright infrigement and will remove works as soon as we are notified.

Any author has the option of placing their work in the "public domain" by just indicating so and provides the opportunity for others to post your work so others can share your creativity. Your name would appear along with the work with "public domain" stated and not the copyright.
