The path ahead, what yet may come,
I leave to time and chance;
Design has fled, the pendulum
Now swings by happenstance.
Mute memories will not avail
To guide my steps today;
Hypotheses ignobly fail
To specify the way.
I well recall the dreams perdu,
Those fantasies of youth;
They all have fallen victim to
The ravages of truth.
But yet along life's corridor
I stride without misgiving
And sing my song, still grateful for
The miracle of living.
