An Anthem For Today
-- by Robert H. Rises Copyright 1998 -- bries@winfinity.com

It seems like only yesterday that we two were made one
And off we went, just you and I, into the rising sun.
And as the years went racing by we felt each other grow
More dear and precious in our hearts; our love had made it so.

But love alone is not enough to stem the tide of years,
And as they pass we feel within the stir of tiny fears:
Has waistline moved? Has ardor dimmed? Has hairline gone awry?
Each little line and fold of flesh is cause for one more sigh.

But hold! To shouts of glad "Huzzah"s the saving tidings chime:
A brace of pills now give the means to check the press of time.
One saves the pate from nudity; the other--well, you know
How Mama's getting kittenish, and watch for Papa's glow!

So, swing on, World! All's well again! We've beat the odds once more!
And soon we'll cure the common cold--or what are miracles for?
