Banana Dan's Banana Stand
-- by Daniel Parks - Copyright 1998 -- sheila.kaye@juno.com

One spring day, not long ago,
a good friend gave to me.
A wondrous and amazing plant,
a small banana tree.
With loving care a planting sight,
selected in our yard.
And soon the tree was ten feet tall,
and really growing hard.

Unfurling leaves that spread aloft,
a green umbrella made.
I found myself on leisure days,
relaxing in it's shade.
Soon baby trees were everywhere,
like spreading weeds they grew.
A banana forest in our yard,
a great banana zoo.

And then the trees began to grow,
bananas by the bunch.
Here and there and everywhere,
we couldn't eat that much.
So with some wood, and lots of nails,
I set in place a plan.
And soon out front, out on our street,
was Dan's banana stand.

Things went well for quite a while,
a living we could make.
Sold fresh bananas by the bunch,
and pies my wife would bake.
People came from all around,
to buy a bunch or two.
And maybe even sample some,
of Dan's banana brew.

But then one day, as luck would have,
our trees began to spread.
Beyond the yard, and past the fence,
and way beyond the shed.
In neighbors yards, down by the creek,
and soon all over town.
Banana trees were everywhere,
on every piece of ground.

The city counsel met one night,
our fate it would discuss.
Banana trees, the Mayor proclaimed,
would soon the budget bust!
We've got to stop these spreading trees,
we've got to cut them down.
Or there is very little hope,
that we can save our town.

A very sad and dreary day,
it was for me, my friend.
The glorious days of Banana Dan's
banana stand would end.
Our trees were all, too soon cut down,
not a one remained.
And Banana Dan's Banana Stand,
just a memory in my brain.
