Poor Old Beggar
-- by William G. Lyon -- Copyright 1997 -- lyon0013@inquo.net

His Pants were all Tattered and his Shoes were well worn,
Indeed as others looked at him, on their face appeared Scorn.
Yet by no fault of his, had he to wander this bare Earth,
For he had been real Ambitious since the day of his Birth.

He staggered when he walked, but he indeed was not drunk,
Although the clothes on his back, were so tattered and stunk.
His arms were so Skinny, it seems he lacked good food to eat,
And there were holes in the bottom of the Shoes on his feet.

You see, Years ago this Poor Old Beggar once had to be me,
My children had left me, and my wife no longer I could see.
I lost my job in the City, and had no place wherefor to live,
And then all of my Money to the Government I did give.

Yes, it was to pay back taxes, that I knew not, I did owe,
So then off to the Poor House, as a Stranger I did go.
So now Friends I ask Pity, I have no place for to live,
Nor another cent of my Earnings, to the Government to give.

My Heart it's half broken, because my children don't know,
That the Crook in my Back, and my Limp it does show.
So have compassion on me, as I walk down your way,
Then for another moment of sharing, please let me stay.
