Little Church In A Small Town
-- by John Hill -- Copyright 1997 -- jhill@itexas.net

Today, I went back home...
Where I lived before I roamed.
The streets are narrow... the church is small
And the water tower still looks tall.

The preacher was young and new
He seemed nervous as he sat in his pew.
He never said hello to me, but others did
And this took me back to when I was a kid.

After the service, members came by to say hello
After this, I told Mary Jo that it was time to go.
There is one thing for sure.. this I know
The cemetary, lined with crepe myrtles, continues to grow.

Each time I visit this special place,
I see names of childhood friends -- on a monument face.
This takes me back to yesteryear,
And makes me wonder if my time is near.

But I don't have time to dwell on this
There's a lot to be done that I don't want to miss.
I've seen horses, wagons, buggys, T-models and a rocket ship
I figure that the next twenty year journey will really be a trip.
