Come Weep For Friends
(villanelle)

-- by John T. Baker - Copyright 1999 -- JTB8817@aol.com

Come weep for friends we used to know
And reunite in reverie.
(Was it indeed that long ago?)

Our watchword then was "Tallyho!"
In full pursuit of destiny.
Come weep for friends we used to know.

We failed no friend and feared no foe,
Whichever they turned out to be.
(Was it indeed that long ago?)

Content to reap what we might sow,
We sought no boon nor guarantee -
Come weep for friends we used to know.

We vowed to end the status quo
But reckoned not on apathy.
(Was it indeed that long ago?)

I wonder in the fading glow
If they may sometimes think of me . . .
Come weep for friends we used to know.
(Was it indeed that long ago?)
