The Conflict
-- by Don Mulfored - Copyright 1999 -- steldon@nbnet.nb.ca

Insidious Winter, waking once again,
Spreads his cold questing fingers through the night!
He seeks to end Queen Summer's wearying reign,
Deposing her with all his frigid might!

But Summer's abdication's never fast!
Reluctant always to surrender sway
She sheds her brilliant finery at last,
And lets her Consort Sun rest more each day.

Then as the daylight shortens and grows cold,
And Winter's ice-gnarled fingers close their grip,
Bright sunshine softens into molten gold,
Surrendering to his chill dictatorship.

So now despotic Winter reigns supreme!
He sits in grandeur on his glacial throne,
While Summer's children hibernate and dream
Until The Queen returns to claim her own!
