The Critics I Must Face
-- by Chuck Pool - Copyright 1999 -- CPool71148@aol.com

When I write a poem
The critics I must face
People who will analyze
Every word in there I place

They’ll talk to me of meter
And what my poem meant
Yet always seem reluctant
To give a compliment

They think they have a better way
To say what I just said
And recommend I change my words
To some of theirs instead

They’ll tell me how my poem
Can be better, if I would
Add a comma or a hyphen
To where they think I should

Now I hardly recognize
The poem that I wrote
Since everything I said before
Is now another’s quote

Who are these people anyway
Who think they are so smart
And always want to prove their point
By tearing mine apart

Perhaps I’ll do things differently
In the coming days ahead
And simply tell the experts
To write their own instead
