Farmstead
-- by Vance Oliphant - Copyright 2000 -- vanlorol@webtv.net

Just down the road.....around the bend,
Lies a lonesome old farmstead; it's useful life at an end.

The barn roof leaks badly; the windows are gone;
It once seethed with activity at the crack of dawn.

There were cows to milk and horses to feed,
Before tilling the soil and planting the seed.

The corn crib looks shabby and the bins won't hold grain;
They won't be asked to do so, ever again.

The remaining out buildings are in disrepair,
And the house is definitely the worse for wear.

The porch railing is broken; front door's open wide,
And it is probably not safe to wander inside.

The party line telephone no longer hangs on the wall,
But the neighbors once eavesdropped on every call.

Weeds grow high in the yard and some trees are dead;
Nearly hidden among them, is a broken down shed.

The farms were once smaller and most wouldn't survive.
Where there is now one, there were probably five.

Those abandoned farmsteads have become a trend,
Just down the road.....around the bend.
