The Flea -- Part One..
Preservation of the Species

-- by Don Mulford- Copyright 1999 -- steldon@nbnet.nb.ca

Those animal protection groups
Must sometimes give us pause;
Some folks will pick on anything
When searching for a "cause".

We’ve heard such lengthy diatribes
About the rights of seals
And creatures such as codfish
And perhaps electric eels.

But I know of a creature
That nobody wants to save,
And maybe you’ll consider it
If such a cause you crave.

It’s smaller than an elephant;
It’s smaller than a pig!
It’s easy to dismiss it
For it isn’t very big.

But sad to say, this little life
Is often much maligned,
Yet Mother Nature built it,
It was carefully designed.

It must have been of use one day,
It must have had its place,
But now it’s shunned, it’s thought a curse,
Upon the human race.

We don’t know what its purpose was
When first it met with man,
But now we strive so very hard
To shorten its life-span.

And it perturbs me when I think
How callous we can be
In trying to eradicate
The poor, defenseless flea.

So make amends and hear my call;
We’ll have a national day
To celebrate its right to life
In some specific way!

We’ll celebrate just once a year,
The world will stand and watch,
And on that day no single soul
Will feel the urge to scratch.

So pledge that you will join the group
That comes to march with me,
And join the first support group
For the sad and lonely flea.
