One early Spring when all was cold
And limbs drooped lifelessly,
A plucky little snail began
To climb a cherry tree.

Two sparrows sitting on a fence
Across the street nearby
Were most amused to see the snail
Continue to creep high.

So finally the sparrows flew
Up to the cherry tree
And rudely said, "You silly snail,
How stupid can you be!"

"It's much too early now for that;
You dummy, can't you see
This tree is bare, there's nothing there,
No fruit upon the tree."

The snail just smiled and inched ahead,
"It's nice of you to care!
But I'm en route, for there'll be fruit
Whenever I get there."
