What a Holiday!
-- by Phillis C. White -- Copyright 1996 -- randaram@tc3net.com

Many years ago, when I was young,
When the Forth of July was about to be sung.
My husband decided to make our day,
We should do something different, out of the way.

We lived in the city, so he came up with this...
We should include his pretty cousin, who was quite a Miss.
And get her a date, and a-fishing we would go.
So he asked one of his friends, a guy named Joe.

Joe agreed, and so it was planned.
We thought our day would just be grand.
Many a mile that day we drove,
Past many a town, and many a grove.

It was hot and sticky, and no air in the car.
Would we ever get there? It was so far.
Our destination was finally reached,
But we drove through some water, and there we were beached!

Peggy and I tried to help, but was no use.
So we walked around, and drank our juice.
No way could we drive out of this mud.
Peggy and I felt like crud.

Pushing and tugging, and the tires did spin.
This was a battle you just couldn't win.
To get some help the guys starting walking.
While Peggy and I sat there talking.

The heat didn't help, and neither did the bugs.
We drank so much juice we emptied the jugs.
Finally a big tractor appeared in our sight!
And a Farmer pulled the car out just right.

Too late to go fishing, with a long drive back.
The day was a shambles, and our moods were black.
But what I learned the following day,
And you can believe what I'm about to say!

Peggy phoned to tell us her state.
She had poison ivy, from this holiday Date!
And I was with her, side by side.
And never a bit of it on my hide!

It was a Holiday I'll never forget,
It's one I'll remember, you can just bet.
