Huckleberries
-- by Ed Shustack -- Copyright 1997 -- shu@bellatlantic.net

Up at the crack of dawn this morn
Put on my britches, patched and worn
Laced my shoes that fit so tight
Hardly slept a wink last night

Out the door on the run I go
Passing each house set in a row
On the road to the base of the hill
Morning breaking beautiful and still

Up the rugged terrain I weave
My picking can next to my sleeve
Climbing higher and moving fast
Nearing the summit I see at last

The hidden place known to me best
That brings excitement deep in my chest
And there before me the huckleberries lay
Mine for the taking throughout this day.
