Kids Were Safe Then
-- by Bernard Gluck - Copyright 2000 -- bgluck@earthlink.net

When I was a kid, there just was no such thing
As bad germs that could hurt you at all
If candy was dropped, you need rinse off the dirt
That got picked up by way of the fall.

The iceman drove up in his old wooden truck
Then he chipped at the blocks on the bed
Us kids then would scurry, not one ever worry
Sucking ice chips could make us get dead.

The tar in the street that got soft from the sun
We would pick up and that we would chew
We said it's a good way to clean our teeth.
In hot summer that's what we would do.

We would bus to the beach all alone for a swim
Not afraid what might come with the tide
Going home we would stand there and wiggle a thumb
For some stranger to give us a ride.
