A New Knowledge
-- by Phillis C. White -- Copyright 1996 -- randaram@tc3net.com

I discovered your pages of poems, and although I really have never been into poetry, your saying what you did about rhyming lured me on. I sure loved these. My favorite was ‘The Slave". How cleverly written, and I enjoyed it so much that I have read it several times! I am a senior, and the computer is my great enjoyment. Anyway, decided to try my hand at a poem, and here it is, for what it's worth. I would enjoy hearing from others. E-mail me at Phillis C. White

I spent a lot of money, a computer I bought.
The money did not matter, for was what I sought.
I knew I'd love it, but there it sat.
I saw where the ‘on-off' switch was at!

After a time, I finally got going.
I found a spread sheet, and became all knowing.
I answered the phone and got involved with some work
When I looked at the screen, my heart gave a jerk!

There was nothing on it. Just was all black.
Did I do something wrong? Is it all out of whack?
[It was a ‘screen saver', I'd never heard of.]
So I just turned off the computer! Land Sakes above!

A few months later, found I could write a letter.
Now this was my speed. I was doing much better.
I struggled along, and learned as I went.
When I make up my mind, I go all ‘Hell Bent.'

Decided a teacher is what I did need.
For it was slow going. I needed some speed.
All kinds of people, so knowledgeable, it seemed.
One of them could teach me, so it was deemed.

I offered to pay, [ I learn very fast].
Not a taker I had, all disappeared.... I was aghast!
I scoured in fury, all the books that I bought,
The words were confusing, as knowledge I sought.

Numbers and symbols, what did they all mean?
For a novice like me, the pickings were lean.
I struggled along, learning a bit here and there.
Till I finally knew more than whose knowledge would not share!

I always plunge into things, and learn as I go.
And learn all I can. I HAVE to know!
On the World Wide Web, is where I am now.
I'll learn about this, but don't ask how.

By trial and error, I plunge right ahead.
Lots more symbols and things that I have read.
What it all means is way beyond me.
But this I'll learn too. Just wait, you'll see!

I surf and I surf, and away I go.
Loving every minute. There is so much to know.
I visited the White House; from Popular Mechanics I learned.
Went to other countries. On and on I was spurned.

Learned to download great landscapes [for my screen saver now].
But to download movies and music,.. I have to learn how!
Getting those free demo's, it's something I crave.
I struggle along, and try to be brave.

I go on and on. Loving it all.
Learning and learning. I'm having a ball.
A Pentium and colored printer I've upgraded to.
So much more learning that I have to do.

The computer's the best, and I'm hooked, I know.
But that is alright. Just watch me go.
