The Miracle of Love
-- by Earl W. Schollenberger (Magoo) Copyright 1998 -- magoo@epix.net

I believed, literally,
in the "bonds of matrimony" -
Two humans "chained" together
'til one chooses alimony.

Time turns lovers' friendship
into hate and condemnation.
They vow to love forever . . .
until divorce or separation.

Some folks try marriage several times,
or just "co-habitate" -
Then spend hours on end observing
the flaws of each new "mate".

Even worse, some go through life
with mates who they despise -
Balefully glaring at each other
until either party dies!

Those were my firm conclusions;
life could be no lother way!
But, while seated in a restaurant,
I saw a MIRACLE today!

A smiling, aged couple
slowly sought a place to dine.
On their breasts each wore a badge
with a tiny valentine.

And, as they ambled closer,
each badge revealed the other's name:
His: "My <3 belongs to Sarah"!
Hers, (with "Alvin") was the same.
I thought, in stunned amazement,
"These CAN'T be married folks!
But then they stopped and chatted,
and later told cute jokes.

As each, in turn, drew laughter,
the other BEAMED with admiration,
And I knew THEIR "bonds of marriage"
were respect and adoration!

After sixty-four YEARS of wedlock,
their bond of love is PURE and strong!
To me, that IS a miracle!
And those two lovers proved me wrong!
