Old Tree
-- by Vance Oliphant- Copyright 1999 -- vanlorol@webtv.net

Just down the road.....around the bend,
Stands an old cottonwood; her life near the end.

Regarding her age, no one knows how long,
That old tre has stood there; staunch and strong.

She's seen scores of harvests and plantings of seed;
Times of plenty and times of need.

If she could talk, what tales she could tell;
But that old tree is mute....probably just as well.

Countless birds have nested in her crown,
Before autumn arrived and her leaves fluttered down.

Her silhouette is impressive against the sky,
But one by one, her branches are beginning to die.

Although the blizzards of winter have taken their toll;
She has weathered the storms quite well, as a whole.

She has withstood lightning, wind and hail,
But ever so slowly, she's beginning to fail.

How many people have rested in her shade?
It's a shame that none have come to her aid.

The day will come when she can no longer contend,
Just down the road....around the bend.
