I Once WasTheSilent Being
-- by Sue Alexander Copyright 1998 --

I once was a pretty baby
held lovingly in my mother’s arms.

I once was a teenager
with all a young girls charms.

I once was a young woman
my future bright and free.

I once was a young bride
my loving husband standing next to me.

I once was a young mother
holding my child to my breast.

I once was a mother
watching my child leave the nest.

I once was a grandmother
waiting for my grandchild’s knock.

I once was an old woman
no longer able to walk.

I once was very tired
and decided to sleep till the end.

I once was a useful person
but it is on others I must now depend.
