The Peter Principle in Action
-- by Don Mulford- Copyright 1999 -- steldon@nbnet.nb.ca

Well, how are you? How’s the family?
Haven’t seen you in an age!
Meant to call you; been too busy
Trying to make a living wage!

Didn’t I tell you? I’m promoted!
I’ve become department head.
Now I’m busy every minute;
My life’s not a feather bed!

Did I tell you ‘bout my office?
I’ve got thirty employees.
They need constant supervision
Or they do just what they please.

Don’t dare trust my secretary!
Always check what he does - twice!
Try to tell him how to do it,
But he won’t take my advice.

If I had the time, I’d fire him.
I’d find someone competent,
Then perhaps my load would lighten;
I’d get more acknowledgment!

I’d soon get the staff in order
If I had the time to spare,
But my work load’s so excessive
Time is something I can’t share.

Things would run a lot more smoothly
If my boss would do his bit!
I can’t think how he keeps his job;
Seems I’m always doing it.

Oh! my soul, the time is flying.
"Fraid I’m going to have to go.
Think I’m needed in the office.
They depend on me, you know!

Sorry we can’t talk much longer:
Enjoyed listening to your views.
Good we had this conversation:
So good hearing all your news!

Glad I met you! See you later!
Let’s take time to have a drink,
Have a meal or do a ball game;
One day I’ll have time to think!

I’m so busy; always busy!
Got no time to stop and chat.
Have to run now, glad I met you:
I WILL call, be sure of that!

GOODBYE!
