The Tall Pine Tree
-- by John Hill -- Copyright 1997 -- jhill@itexas.net

My son, you were young as could be,
when you received a switch called a Pine Tree.
It was your birthday, I'll never forget.
You picked the place, and I planted the tree. You bet!

As time went by, the tree grew,
and I might add, so did you.
I watch the tree develop more each day.
You did the same...too fast, I might say.

Your high school days seemed to end too soon.
Graduation day came, and on the college room.
An adjustment for you and for us.
Since this is what we all wanted there was no fuss.

Time marched on to your drummers tune.
It wasn't too long before you got married...seemed too soon.
Now you are a father as it should be.
There will be many wonderful experiences ahead...you'll see.

Well, son today I looked at your tree...whatta sight.
Standing there through all kinds of weather day and night.
I would like for you to know that the tree reminds me of you...
Because, when needed, you have always been there too.
