The Golden Season
-- by Dr. Edwin E. Vineyard -- Copyright 1997 -- eeviney@fullnet.net

Calls from the shadows beckon
Through the twilight dim;
Dissonant strains of evensong
Weave a callous requiem.

Vaporous is the dew at sunrise
And the autumn of the virgin soul;
The vale of years brings sure demise
To the verdant vine of youth.

Soon after aurora comes the vesper
And the vernal flows to fall;
Halcyon ripeness yields to dotage
As the golden season comes to all.

Transience to perpetuity is the goal
Of theanthropic and imperishable soul.
Sound the dirge for moribund men
As Thanatos becomes a friend.
