Suppose!
-- by Don Mulford- Copyright 1999 -- steldon@nbnet.nb.ca

Suppose that time were flexible, that history could be changed,
Suppose we shaped the past so that the present's rearranged!
Who could we trust with such a task - who should decide our fate?
It must be someone wholly free of prejudice and hate!

Should it be man or woman? Should it be white or black?
Who has the wisdom and the grace to plan our future track?
Imagine, if you can, the great responsibility!
Who is there living who would have the capability?

But past events are absolute, the good and bad are done,
And though we recognize past faults, repentance alters none.
So we won't find a savior who will right all mankind's wrongs
Until we put the least and best where best or least belongs!

For no-one born to humankind has more right to survive,
Be it the poorest peasant or the wealthiest one alive.
>From India's untouchables to richest of tycoons,
>From scientific genius to ignorant buffoons.

The prejudice of race or creed has long engendered shame;
And only true respect for all will salvage our good name.
So just suppose we clean the slate and start to write anew,
But this time giving better thought to everything we do.

And just suppose we treat our kind with reverence and esteem,
And just suppose equality is central to this theme,
Then creed or color won't be used to judge a person's worth,
And fairness and tranquility will grace the Planet Earth.
