When Walter Went To War
-- by Jane F. Hutto - Copyright 1999 -- WILIJAY@aol.com

This is a true poem about when my two uncles, C. A. Fulford, Jr., and Walter Franklin Fulford were serving in the U. S. Navy in World War II.

Were flags unfurled and banners spread
When Walter went to war?

Were marches held in streets downtown,
Or flyers in each store?

No. Mothers wept and nieces cried
When Walter went to war,

And many fathers bowed their heads
Praying for strength, and more.

But little children stood to sing
In schoolrooms far and wide,

And with their singing told the world
About our country's pride.
