Talking Turkey
-- by Earl Shallenberger (Old Magoo) Copyright 1998 -- magoo@epix.net

It's true that the turkey
walks real "herky-jerky"
And besides being ugly,
his thinking's quite murky!

He has just a few assets
with which we're impressed -
Two TASTY drum-sticks,
and white meat on his breast!

But, perhaps he WOULD fly,
not just "hobble" and "wobble"
If he knew, on Thanksgiving,
what WE mean by, "gobble"!

Some folks have "roast piglet"
for their holiday meals.
A pig doesn't "gobble";
He norts, "oinks" and squeals!

He's served on his belly -
(an apple's shoved in his snout).
THAT disgusting display,
We can ALL (ugh) do without!

And "pork-chops" and "spare-ribs"
don't agree in the least
With all the "goodies" prepared
for MY great, turkey feast!

A "goose" is a MEAN bird,
but it's served on some tables.
It "honks" and it bites.
(A "Dutch" one "grexes und graybles"}.*
* ("groans and complains")

It's smarter than a turkey,
so, it raises a "fuss"
'Cause it knows that ITS future
Is "inside" of us!

So, when it lies on its platter,
looking sad and forlorn,
Folka don't WANT to feast;
they just sit there and mourn.

Could the turkey be different? . . .
Not at ALL sad inside?
Could it be, during the meal,
he's even BURSTING with pride?!

And thinks, "Oh! I'm SO handsome!"
"No SWAN looks as neat!
"PLEASE, have another "drum-stick"! -
"I have LOTS of white meat!

And . . . is his GREATEST pride,
his HUGE "wishbone" . . because,
Kids can wish BIGGER "wish lists"
For "Dear Santa Claus"! . . .
