Light Verse
-- by John T. Baker - Copyright 1999 -- JTB8817@aol.com

I like from time to time
To seek refuge in rhyme,
To flee the curse
Of bloated verse
That others find sublime.

I'd rather keep my eyes on
The shimmering horizon
Than to demean
The current scene
By counting all the flies on.

To rhyme is fascinating,
Well-nigh intoxicating;
The blandishments
Of sheer nonsense
For me are captivating.

Light verse makes no pretense
At great grandiloquence;
A quip, a smile
That may beguile,
Amuse without offense.
