My occupation nowadays
Is mainly reminiscing,
Explaining to my younger friends
What all they have been missing;
How things were better long ago
Before it got so crowded,
When people still took time to talk
And seldom ever shouted;
Before machines usurped our minds,
Subordinating thinking;
Before the boundless open space
Began so sadly shrinking;
When all were free to cultivate
Their own distinctive manner,
Without compulsion to parade
Beneath a common banner;
When simple pleasures satisfied
And still left room for dreaming;
Success was won through industry,
Not artifice nor scheming.
I reminisce about those days,
Recalling all their glories,
In just the way my granddad told
The very same old stories.
