You Told Me
-- by Don Mulford - Copyright 1999 -- steldon@nbnet.nb.ca

I never did like hospitals, but I must visit you.
I only did what I was sure you wanted me to do.

The doctor told me that you wouldn’t know me if I came,
But I decided that I’d come and tell you just the same.

It really bothers me to see your blank and vacant eyes,
But it will ease my conscience if I can apologize.

A week ago last Thursday was the day I did the deed.
I tried to be so helpful, but I didn’t quite succeed

Don’t try to put the blame on me, you told me what to do!
And surely it was not MY fault, misunderstanding you!

I thought we both spoke English, but your meaning was obscure
You used some words I didn’t know, your grammar wasn’t pure.

So I just chose the words I liked, decided what they meant,
And then, my friend, I did my best! To help was my intent!

I stood beside you, calm and cool, while you prepared the task.
Perhaps I should have questioned you? Alas, I didn’t ask.

You handed me the hammer and you held the spike in place,
Then you issued your instructions with conviction on your face.

These last few words you uttered; I remember what you said;
"Now watch me very carefully, and when I nod my head,"
"You hit it!"
-----So I did!
