The American Cancer Society
CanSupport Visitor Program
The CanSupport visitor program seeks senior citizen volunteers who can visit isolated cancer patients in their home and as as friends and companions. Volunteers make themselves available for a cancer patient to:
- share concerns and listen;
- find other community resources;
- help with shopping and errands;
- give full-time caregivers a break; and
- read aloud.
A CanSupport visitor is a concerned and caring volunteer who:
- is selected because of his or her warmth and responsiveness to people who are in need;
- has experience cancer personally or through family or friends;
- completes a special American Cancer training program; and
- will attend regular CanSupport visitor meetings.
The American Cancer Society is also looking for volunteers to drive patients to and from treatments. Many cancer patients have no way to get to treatment. They need your time and your car to help the reach their medical provider. All you do is pick up the patient at home and provide transportation to and from treatment.
To help, contact your local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
